The Montana Branch Library reopened for in-person service in March 2022. Library visitors can browse the adult and youth collections, pick up library holds, use computers for up to 60 minutes, and check out materials.
The Montana Branch Library opened as a storefront library in a rented building, at 1528-30 Montana Avenue, in February 1952. After seven years, the thriving Branch was in need of more space, so a new facility was constructed at its current location.
Designed by Weldon Fulton, architect of the Fairview Branch, the Montana Branch opened to much fanfare on March 1, 1960. In 2002, the Branch underwent major renovations, including the addition of a community room, as part of a system-wide upgrade of the branch libraries funded in part by a bond issue passed by Santa Monica voters. The Montana Branch benefitted from an interior improvements project in 2012. The current building size is 7,517 square feet.
