This year's theme, My Sustainable School, educated students on the recently adopted Sustainability Plan for SMMUSD, which is organized into eight categories: climate, education & engagement, energy, water, waste, transportation, food & nutrition and operations.
Each category has specific implementation strategies and goals to be reached by 2020, 2025 and 2030. The Sustainability Plan is the product of collaborative efforts between the District’s Board of Education, staff, educators, students, parents, and community members and was inspiration enough for some amazing posters from participating student artists.
The contest was open to all K-12 students in Santa Monica. This year’s outreach efforts educated over 900 public and private school students and after school program participants, including students at Community Corporation of Santa Monica facilities, resulting in 583 poster submissions and 20 selected winners. The judges included representatives from the City of Santa Monica, Sustainable Works and the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District.
The City of Santa Monica's Office of Sustainability and the Environment and Sustainable Works would like to congratulate the winners and participants!
