This past Saturday, thousands attended Santa Monica’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration that turned Delaware Avenue into a festive, colorful plaza.

For the past seven years, the event has been contained to Woodlawn Cemetery, and for the first time it spilled out into the street to offer additional programming and neighborhood activities. This new format was informed by a multi-year community engagement project. The sacred activities associated with this celebration took place inside Woodlawn Cemetery, while the more festive activities took place on the street.

Local and regional artists, vendors and community members shared diverse perspectives and representations of Día de los Muertos through their music, dance, storytelling, altars and craft workshops. The day invited exploration of the meaning and variety of ways in which this special day is celebrated.
