Happy Birthday Marion!

Sunday, January 14

11 a.m. – 2 p.m. - RSVP (Free)

Hosted by the Santa Monica Conservancy. Docents in vintage attire evoke Marion’s Hollywood inner circle to shine a light on the actress, philanthropist, and mistress of media tycoon William Randolph Hearst at Davies’ 1928 Julia Morgan designed Guest House. Cut a rug with dancers from Santa Monica’s Arthur Murray Dance Studio to music from the classic American songbook by LA Love Band. Enjoy magician Tom Frank, and snap a silent movie photo of yourself. Producer Elaina Archer and Davies’ biographer Lara Fowler will share insights into Marion, her life and times, and Russell Johnson, curator of UCLA’s History of Medicine and the Sciences will present original materials and speak about Marion’s philanthropic work. At 1:30 p.m., a bubbly birthday toast caps the event.

Beach Walk & Sketch with the Audubon Society

Sunday, January 21

9 – 11 a.m. - RSVP (Free)

Bring your sense of wonder and take to the sands to sketch nature’s offerings on our beautiful stretch of Santa Monica State Beach! Binoculars, drawing boards, pencils and newsprint will be provided, or bring your own easy-to-carry sketching tools.

An Evening with Playwright and Writer-In-Residence, Luis Alfaro

Tuesday, January 23

6:30 – 8:00 p.m. - RSVP (Free)

Meet native Angeleno and playwright Luis Alfaro and listen to a fascinating overview of art making, community building and national and international theatre work. Winner of the MacArthur “Genius Award” and a current Ford Foundation “Art of Change” Fellow, Alfaro spent ten years at downtown’s Mark Taper Forum creating and producing new American plays. Get backstage detail on plays and projects that have traveled to regional theatres across America, including adaptations of Greek classics that were featured just up the street at the Getty Villa in Malibu. Alfaro takes questions, dishes on how the theatrical sausage is made, discusses his roots in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles, and relates his history as a performance artist and political roustabout.
