The Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce and the City of Santa Monica are thrilled to present the Buy Local Health and Fitness Festival at Reed Park on Saturday, September 7th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Let’s all celebrate a healthy and happy lifestyle for the Santa Monica community!
This free event brings together businesses and non-profits for a fun-filled day while raising awareness about the economic, environmental, and community benefits of thinking local first.
Throughout the day participants will be able to enjoy delicious and healthy treats from local food trucks, shopping opportunities at Buy Local pop-up shops, and expert advice including free fitness workouts from local gyms and fitness trainers. There will be an interactive zone for children and pets, and free health screenings and one-on-one visits with local health care practitioners from Santa Monica’s four hospitals, as well as important resources offered from the City of Santa Monica.
This year’s line-up has something for everyone and activities for all age groups. For kids, there will be a coloring station where they can pick up a free Buy Local backpack to decorate. UCLA Health will have a life-size “Operation” game where kids of all ages can test their dexterity skills and learn about body parts. The Health Zone will also include free blood pressure readings and glucose testing from Kaiser Permanente, healthy meal planning activities from Providence Saint John’s dieticians and nutrition experts, and a series of free workshops and mini exercises focusing on “Maximizing Brain Health for Seniors” including a magic show by SM UCLA’s Dr. John Miller. Also back by popular demand are the beloved therapy dogs from People-Animal Connection.
The Buy Local Stage has live music, entertainment and fitness demonstrations throughout the day, starting with the Santa Monica High School Marching Band opening the festival at 11 a.m. and ending with the Santa Monica College Emeritus Gospel Choir at 3:30 p.m. In between there will be opportunities to participate in a boxing circuit, dance with the Funky Diva’s and Dude’s, do some dynamic stretching, core strengthening and gentle yoga, and learn the cha-cha with Arthur Murray Dance Center.
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and Santa Monica Education Foundation are key partners of this annual event. The festival’s lead sponsors are Cedars Sinai, Providence St. John's Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, and UCLA Health Center. The event is in partnership with Santa Monica Classic 5K/10K Run, Santa Monica Education Foundation, Buy Local Santa Monica Committee, Main Street Business Improvement Association, Montana Avenue Merchants Association, Pico Improvement Organization, and Downtown Santa Monica Inc.
