Projects are approved and work will soon be underway to reimagine the Civic Center campus along 4th Street, Pico Boulevard, Main Street, and Avenida Mazatlan. When you visit the Civic Center in summer 2020, it will be a whole new space with a multipurpose sports field and the home of an early childhood education center for our youngest Santa Monicans. The historic Civic Auditorium will continue to anchor the site.
The Civic Multipurpose Sports Field begins construction in August 2019 and finishes in July 2020. The Early Childhood Lab School broke ground in March 2018 and will finish in May 2020 before the 2020 school year. A major water infrastructure project is still planned for the northwestern parcel of the site, but will not break ground this summer. Stay informed on project updates and construction timelines at www.santamonica.gov/civiccenter.
As construction begins, here are some things to keep in mind:
Nearly all surface lot parking is going away.
As of July 29, 2019, when construction fencing goes up, nearly all surface lot parking will go away. If you visit or work in the area, you’ll need to park in the Civic Center structure or in nearby or Downtown public parking lots. You can get a complete list of options and prices at www.smgov.net/parking.
A very small number of spaces will remain for a limited period of time at the existing hourly rate. These spots are located next to the Santa Monica Courthouse.
There will be no impact to transit routes or street parking.
Big Blue Bus and Metro bus service will not be impacted during construction.
Construction is contained on the site and there will be no impact to street parking along Main Street.
