Why Master Planning Matters

The City is kicking-off two master planning projects this month that will shape the future of parks and recreation in Santa Monica. The Parks & Recreation Master Plan Update is the framework to guide decision-making over the next 20 years as we improve the beach and parks and recreation system. In addition, our Memorial Park Master Plan will explore options for combining the existing park with the 2.9-acre Colorado Yards/former Fisher Lumber site – an important step towards renovating and expanding the park.
Master planning is cooperative problem-solving. It’s the creative process we use to examine how a park (or parks and recreation system) exists today and envision the future. It also presents an opportunity for you to help us develop that vision.
Parks and the beach are shared community spaces and our recreational programs and facilities serve people of all ages and abilities. Whether you are a swimmer or community gardener, parent, child or senior, frequent park user or sometimes visitor, your unique experience matters.
We need to hear from you to better understand the present and plan for the future. What is your favorite park and what do you do there? How could our parks be improved? We welcome your ideas, big or small.
I hope you will take a few moments to complete the quick surveys for both projects and share your thoughts and come to a scheduled community workshop!
Together we can ensure Santa Monica’s park and recreation system continues to meet our community’s needs and provides a legacy for future generations.
