Come join us for a day of healing and self-expression through the power of dance, music and poetry. Learn Afro-Cuban orixá dance with Laroye Aña, West African dance with Jahanna Blunt and enjoy a poetry workshop with Get Lit. Let the rhythm move you and the melodies soothe your soul as we come together to connect and rejuvenate through the universal languages of movement, words and sound.  

All bodies, ages, abilities and levels are welcomed to join. Please come with an open heart and a willingness to let go and be present in the moment. See you soon! 

SCHEDULE 

From 11 AM – 3 PM, we welcome you to take place in 3 unique workshops by Laroye Aña, Jahanna Blunt and Get Lit.  

11:30 AM – West African Dance with Jahanna Blunt  

Jahanna Blunt is a native of Los Angeles, California, and began her dance career as a seven-year-old with Abalaye African Drum and Dance Ensemble. In her West African dance class, she will teach dance and rhythms that have origins in Guinea, West Africa. 

12:30 PM – Poetry with Get Lit

"Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence." - Audre Lorde 

Enjoy a poetry workshop with Get Lit a Los Angels based nonprofit founded in 2006 whose mission is to increase literacy, empower youth, and energize communities through poetry and visual media. In this workshop they will use their method of call and response poetry, you will claim a classic poem that resonates with you and write an original poem in response. 

1:30 PM – Afro-Cuban Dance with Laroye Aña  

Laroye Aña was born and raised in Havana, Cuba and now resides in Los Angeles and began her career in the arts at 4 years old. She has danced with companies like Compañia de Teatro y Danza Tony Menendez, and Compania de Ballet y Espectaculos Tropicana among others. In her Afro-Cuban orixá dance class, we will learn about Iemanja, the queen of the oceans, mother of all the orixás, nurturing and loving.
