Arts & Literacy Festival at Virginia Avenue Park on April 30

SANTA MONICA -- The Arts & Literacy Festival for children and families presented by Virginia Avenue Park and the Pico Branch Library will be held on Saturday, April 30. 

What:  A free Family Arts & Literacy Festival where books come to life! Interactive activities include Storyville where participants can meet and interview beloved book characters.  Attendees can get active with the Santa Monica Police and Fire Departments as part of the “Active Zone”. The Santa Monica Farmer’s Market will hold a cooking demonstration and a food treasure hunt will take place. Swap a book, Make a book, Write a book with reDiscover Center.   Learn about promoting your child’s health & development and even sign up for pre-school with SMMUSD.  Spend the day in the park reading, moving and crafting!    

Bring a picnic lunch, refillable water bottle and blankets or chairs for you and your family to enjoy performances by Rhythm Child, Blackstreet USA Puppet Theater, and Baila Baila! 

Where:  Virginia Avenue Park Campus, 2201 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica

When:   Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Walking and biking are encouraged.  Virginia Avenue Park is served by Big Blue Bus line number 7.  There is limited additional parking available at Venice Family Clinic (2509 Pico Blvd).  The park is wheelchair accessible and welcomes persons of all abilities.  For special accommodations, contact 310.458.8688 or TTY 310.917.6626.       

Background:  The festival promotes the Santa Monica Cradle to Career Building Blocks to Kindergarten Campaign, a project involving parents, educators, nonprofit partners, and the Child Care and Early Education Task Force,  working together to make sure all Santa Monica children start kindergarten ready to learn and thrive.
