June 21, 2016 12:00 AM

Santa Monica, California – As part of its ongoing Adult Summer Reading series, Santa Monica Public Library is pleased to present a live reading of The Grapes of Wrath by the Santa Monica Rep. A 1988 stage adaptation by Frank Galati of John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the play will be performed on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.

Long considered one of the staples of classic American literature, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of a family of tenant farmers struggling to survive the economic catastrophe of the Depression era and the devastation wrought on American soil by the Dust Bowl.  Playwright Frank Galati adapted Steinbeck’s storyline into a play nearly fifty years after the novel’s first publication, and the play went to critical acclaim from its initial run at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater to its 1990 run on Broadway. The Santa Monica Rep’s live reading is directed by Jen Bloom.

This program free and open to all ages.  Seating is first come, first served. The Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible.
