Santa Monica Public Library presents An Afternoon with Alison Bechdel

February 10, 2017 10:07 AM

Santa Monica, California – Santa Monica Public Library kicks off its annual community reading program Santa Monica READS with an afternoon author talk by award-winning author Alison Bechdel on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s MLK, Jr. Auditorium, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.

Alison Bechdel is the author of the Santa Monica Reads 2017 featured book, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, a comics-based memoir tracking the young Alison’s coming of age and coming out, as well as her complicated relationship with her father Bruce.  Published to wide acclaim and multiple literary award nominations and wins in 2006, the book went on to serve as the source of a Tony-winning Broadway musical adaptation – Fun Home: The Musical – which coincidentally runs concurrently with this year’s Santa Monica Reads program at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

As 2017 is the first time Santa Monica Reads takes up a nonfiction book, as well as an entirely new and burgeoning format in the graphic novel/graphic memoir category, it is fitting that Alison Bechdel opens this year’s program.  Santa Monica Public Library invites community members to come and meet the author, discover her writing and illustrating process, then dig into her groundbreaking work over the next several weeks in one or more of the many book discussions or complementary special events planned throughout the five week program.  For more information on this and other planned Santa Monica Reads events, visit http://smpl.org/FunHome.

The Afternoon with Alison Bechdel is a free ticketed event and seating is limited.  Free tickets for Auditorium seating will be released one hour prior to the event outside the Auditorium.  One ticket per guest, and guests must be present to receive a ticket.  No prior reservations are available.  Seating is first come, first served.

Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible. For disabled services, call Library Administration at (310) 458-8606 at least one week prior to event. The Main Library is served by Big Blue Bus routes 1, 7, R7, R10, and 18. Bicycle parking racks are available at the library.  For more information on this and other public programs, visit www.smpl.org or contact the Santa Monica Public Library at (310) 458-8600.
