Scott McCloud presents Comics & the Art of Visual Communication

at the Santa Monica Public Library

Santa Monica, California – Santa Monica Public Library is pleased to welcome acclaimed American cartoonist and comics theorist Scott McCloud for “Comics and the Art of Visual Communication” on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s MLK, Jr. Auditorium, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.

Scott McCloud’s fast-moving visual lecture helps to kick off the fifteenth anniversary of Santa Monica Reads, the wildly popular community reading program that has invited Santa Monicans to read and discuss the same book together for the better part of a generation now, and will run this year from February 25 through March 30. This year’s featured novel is Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, a moving comics-format depiction of the author’s youthful coming of age and her complicated relationship with her father.

Realizing that some readers might cast a critical or suspicious eye on the graphic novel format, the Santa Monica Public Library reached out to Scott McCloud, long considered a dean in the thoughtful study of comics, to set the stage for the program and local readers.  As McCloud describes his lecture: “Comics is finally coming of age as an artistic and literary form. Now this once-maligned medium of expression is poised for new opportunities, thanks to a mutating media environment and a potential revolution in visual education.  In “Comics and the Art of Visual Communication,” I shine a light on these and other fascinating trends—and demonstrate why every visual choice we make matters—in a fast-moving cascade of images and ideas.”  A book sale and signing courtesy of Hi De Ho Comics follows the lecture.

This lecture is a free ticketed event and seating is limited.  Free tickets for Auditorium seating will be released one hour prior to the event outside the Auditorium.  One ticket per guest, and guests must be present to receive a ticket.  No prior reservations are available.  Seating is first come, first served.

Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible. For disabled services, call Library Administration at (310) 458-8606 at least one week prior to event. The Main Library is served by Big Blue Bus routes 1, 7, R7, R10, and 18. Bicycle parking racks are available at the library.  For more information on this and other Santa Monica Reads book discussions and special events, visit http://smpl.org/FunHome or contact the Santa Monica Public Library at (310) 458-8600.
