June 28, 2017 10:07 AM
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – At its meeting last night, June 27, 2017, the Santa Monica City Council considered a temporary and permanent option for a multi-purpose sports field at the Civic Center as well as four alternatives. Here is a summary of the options and alternatives Council considered. More details are included in this chart.
- Option 1: Temporary field, no new parking, $8.6 million
- Option 2: Permanent field in collaboration with Santa Monica-Malibu School District, two levels of subterranean parking (725 spaces), $95.4 million (subject to bond passage)
- Alternative 1: Permanent field, one level of parking, $60 million (subject to bond passage)
- Alternative 2: Temporary field, lease parking offsite, $8.6 million (parking cost unknown)
- Alternative 3: Temporary field at Memorial Park, cost has not been determined
- Alternative 4: Defer field development and issue RFP for Civic Auditorium operator
After hearing testimony from more than 50 community members, field proponents, Civic Auditorium advocates, and representatives from the Santa Monica Courthouse and legal community, Council directed staff to move forward with a temporary sports field at the Civic Center as well as continue to explore sports field options as a component of the Memorial Park master planning and expansion process.
Council’s unanimous motion also directed staff to:
- Work with the Santa Monica Superior Courthouse leadership and legal constituents and other entities that utilize the Civic Center parking lot to find remedies to their concerns regarding parking.
- Move forward with a Request For Proposals (RFP) for a private partner to help reimagine the Civic Auditorium.
- Conduct a comprehensive parking study required by the Coastal Commission.
- Consult with the Santa Monica-Malibu School District Board on whether they are willing to contribute funding for a softball field overlay on the multi-purpose field at the Civic Center. If not, a multi-purpose field without a softball overlay will be pursued.
Part of the discussion included exploring a Pony League field as part of the Memorial Park master planning process.
