City Seeks Community Input on Public Art in Santa Monica
July 17, 2017 10:01 AM
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – What is the role of public art in Santa Monica? How can it benefit the community? What locations and places in Santa Monica would you like to see public art?
The City of Santa Monica invites you to help shape the future of public art in Santa Monica by participating in a community forum in conjunction with the development of a citywide Public Art Master Plan. The opinions gathered will inform recommendations in the Public Art Master Plan, which is projected for completion in the spring of 2018.
Join in the conversation to guide Santa Monica’s future investment in public art. The program, including a brief presentation of current public art projects around the country, will be the same at the following two community forums which are open to everyone:
Saturday, July 29
Virginia Avenue Park
2200 Virginia Avenue
10-11:30 a.m.
Wednesday, August 2
Santa Monica Main Public Library
601 Santa Monica Boulevard
6-7:30 p.m.
Can’t attend? Take a public art survey
Another way to participate in the discussion about public art in Santa Monica is by taking a short online survey at https://docs.google.com/forms/u/0/d/e/1FAIpQLScDFIF-ictU-0eco3Wr4jAsujrbhKz-_g8Dmp5Kl8DlBE4KBg/viewform?usp=sf_link. It takes only 10 to 15 minutes and will help us to better understand where and how public art can have a strong impact in our community.
About the Public Art Master Plan
The City of Santa Monica currently is undertaking a year-long public art master planning process with consultants Gail M. Goldman Associates and Elwood & Associates. The Public Art Master Plan will provide a clear vision for the future of public art in Santa Monica for the next decade. The plan will outline goals for the selection and placement of public art, programming opportunities, strategic partnerships, and funding opportunities. It will include policy and procedure recommendations as well as direction for ongoing program development and management.
Artist-Led Community Outreach
The City of Santa Monica presents Paletas Santa Monica, an artist-led community outreach project by Mario Mesquita, to engage residents throughout Santa Monica in conversations about the future of public art in the city. Mario and his team of local artists and educators will travel throughout Santa Monica’s neighborhoods between July 29 and August 29, 2017 on two custom pedal-powered Paletero Carts. They will stop at predetermined locations to gather input on residents’ awareness of existing public art and what and where they would like to see public art in the future. In exchange, each participant will be treated to a delicious ice-cold, hand-crafted popsicle.
