City Manager Rick Cole on Significant SMPD Arrest

September 26, 2018 12:05 PM

The swift action taken by the Santa Monica Police Department, working in collaboration with the Los Angeles Police Department resulted in the arrest of Ramon Escobar, the suspect being charged for the seven violent attacks in Los Angeles and Santa Monica over the past few weeks. We send our thoughts and condolences to the victims and their families.  We are committed to protecting everyone in our community from violence and crime: residents, visitors and people experiencing homelessness.

Santa Monica’s City Council, staff and community partners are relentlessly focused on devoting additional resources and new approaches to dealing with the regional increase in crime that we are seeing here in our community. This week, Chief Cynthia Renaud swore in four new officers, each lateral hires from other law enforcement agencies that come to our police force with experience and expertise.  They will soon be joined by six additional officers graduating from the academy.  I am proud of the outstanding work being done by the Santa Monica Police Department -- and remind everyone that we all have a role in helping keep our community safe. If you witness violence of any kind, please contact SMPD by calling 9-1-1. We also have Neighborhood Resource Officers assigned to every part of the city to work with residents, businesses and community organizations – they can be reached through www.santamonicapd.org/nro/.  Finally, if you know someone experiencing homelessness that is in need of shelter, please contact LA Homeless Services Authority by dialing 2-1-1.
