Santa Monica Joins National Coalition Challenging the Federal Communications Commission’s Ruling Regarding Wireless Facilities

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – On Tuesday, October 9, the City Council authorized the City of Santa Monica to join a national coalition of local governments challenging a September 26 order by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). The FCC’s order curtails local municipalities’ ability to regulate small cell wireless facilities in the public right-of-way. The ruling limits local control over aesthetics and reduces wireless permitting timelines that will require cities to modify permitting processes. Los Angeles, San Jose and Portland are among the coalition of participating cities.

The City of Santa Monica is currently in the process of modifying rules for wireless facilities in the public right-of-way. The recent FCC ruling will dramatically reduce the City’s ability to control future wireless facilities in the public right-of-way.
