Santa Monica, California – Santa Monica Public Library presents Stephen M. Silverman, discussing his new book, The Amusement Park: 900 Years of Thrills and Spills, and the Dreamers and Schemers Who Built Them, on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at 2:00 pm in the Main Library’s Multipurpose Room, 601 Santa Monica Blvd. in Santa Monica.
Author and rollercoaster aficionado Stephen M. Silverman takes you on an electrifying visual journey of the history of Venice Pier, Santa Monica’s Pacific Ocean Park, the Long Beach Pike, and other area amusement parks, with tales of the colorful characters who built them—and ultimately destroyed them. Among them were developers Abbot Kinney and Henry Gaylord Wilshire, philanthropist Griffith J. Griffith, and moviemakers William Selig and Hal Roach. Other parks Silverman will discuss are the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair Midway, Coney Island, and Disneyland. A book sale and signing follow the program.
