Santa Monica is developing a citywide action plan to enhance services for older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers. We are building the plan in partnership with YOU - the Santa Monica community - thanks to a California Department of Aging Local Aging and Disability Action Planning (LADAP) grant and with support from the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.

In the coming months, the City will create its own age-and disability-friendly action plan to address the current, emerging and future needs of Santa Monica’s older adults, people with disabilities and their caregivers. The direction of Santa Monica’s plan will be guided by the Action Plan Advisory Committee and a thorough community engagement process - and this is where you come in… we invite you to get involved!

We are recruiting community stakeholders to be committee members, including: older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers, and industry professionals (current/retired). People who represent related fields are also encouraged to apply, including public policy, health and social services, financial services, philanthropy, non-profit management, and diversity, equity and inclusion. We are seeking to create an Advisory Committee that reflects the diversity of our community – individuals from a diversity of backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

What is Santa Monica’s Aging and Disability Action Plan?

The City of Santa Monica is developing a citywide action plan to enhance services for older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers, thanks to a California Department of Aging Local Aging and Disability Action Planning (LADAP) grant.

As a California Department of Aging grantee, the City joins nearly 100 communities across California that are building or implementing age- and disability-friendly action plans, programs and policies that are in alignment with California’s Master Plan for Aging. California’s Master Plan for Aging is a 10-year blueprint to prepare the state for upcoming demographic changes and support California’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. City of Santa Monica is now a member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities and will benefit from, and contribute to, the national body of knowledge and best practices making communities more age-friendly.

What is the Action Plan Advisory Committee?

The Action Plan Advisory Committee will guide the plan’s development by reviewing existing community data and best practices, informing a community needs assessment, and selecting the Action Plan’s strategic priorities. The Advisory Committee will include community stakeholders, subject matter experts, non-profit partners, City commissioners, and City staff.

Who should submit a statement of interest for the Advisory Committee?

Community stakeholders including: older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers, and industry professionals (current/retired). People who represent related fields are also encouraged to apply, including public policy, health and social services, financial services, philanthropy, non-profit management, and diversity, equity and inclusion. Applicants do not need to be Santa Monica residents. We are seeking to create an Advisory Committee that reflect the diversity of our community – individuals from a diversity of backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Language interpretation and disability accommodations will be made available for Advisory Committee meetings.

What is the time commitment for Advisory Committee members?

Kicking off on October 29th, the Advisory Committee will be very active meeting weekly or biweekly in-person and/or virtually as well as reviewing materials to prepare for meetings. Participation on the Action Plan Advisory Committee requires a time commitment of up to several hours per week during these times:

October 29, 2024 thru Mid-December 2024: Adopting guiding principles, analyzing available data, informing the approach to the community needs assessment.
Mid-March 2025 thru Mid-May 2025: Reviewing community needs assessment findings, prioritizing strategies, approving Action Plan elements.

How will Advisory Committee members be selected?

Statement of interest forms received by the deadline will be assessed by a review panel with representatives from City Commissions, City Manager’s Office Equity Team and the City’s Action Plan consulting team. The City is seeking to create an Advisory Committee that reflects the diversity of the community and members will be selected to achieve a balance of subject matter expertise that will collectively benefit the development of Santa Monica’s plan.

Community stakeholders on the Advisory Committee will be balanced as follows:

Aging expertise (2), priority for min. 1 person with lived experience
Disabilities expertise (2), priority to min. 1 person with lived experience
Caregiver expertise (1), priority to lived experience
Regional representative with one or more areas of expertise (1)
General project-related expertise (2)

In the statement of interest form, applicants will describe their connection to the Santa Monica community, why they are interested in serving on the AC, subject matter expertise and general skills that can contribute to the creation of the Action Plan. Applicants are not required to be Santa Monica residents.

Advisory Committee Recognition

In appreciation of the significant contribution of time and expertise, Advisory Committee members will be recognized in multiple ways:

Dinner at the Advisory Committee kick-off meeting;
Named in Action Plan materials and City communications;
Small stipend for community members participating in the Advisory Committee, provided directly to individuals or to their non-profit employer if participating on behalf of their agency.
