The Santa Monica
Airport Paving Improvements Project (Project) consists
of pavement surface maintenance repairs aimed at bolstering
safety, efficiency, and compliance with current Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) guidelines and regulations. Enhancements include: asphalt
paving, slurry seal coatings, and installation of new pavement
markings in various areas including the south Transient Parking Apron
adjacent to Taxiway B, the three southwesterly airplane tie-down lots, the turn
around area at the end of the Perimeter Road, the area between
the southeast hangers, the area surrounding the northwest
hangers, the area between the northeast hangers, and the area between
the 3100 Airport Avenue buildings. An overview of project work
locations is shown in Figure 1. These improvements align with the
City of Santa Monica’s commitment to maintaining airport safety standards for
all airport users.
The goal of this project is to rehabilitate the Santa
Monica Airport’s selected pavement areas to be consistent
with current FAA guidelines and planned airport operations. A visual
condition survey and a site investigation were performed in December
2023. Numerous areas were identified, inspected, and a variety of
recommendations were developed into a construction project by engineering
and airport staff in the Public Works Department.
Notice of Upcoming Airport Closures for Airfield Paving
Improvements
Beginning Tuesday February 18, 2025, at 9:00 p.m. local time
until Saturday February 22, 2025 at 5:00 a.m. local time, there will be
scheduled airport closures due to the Airport Airfield Pavement Improvements
Project.
The Airport Pavement Improvements Project will continue
during daytime hours between February 24, 2025 thru June 30, 2025 and provide
following improvements.
Construction improvements consist of pavement rehabilitation
of the Taxiway B/B1 Intersection (Work Area 1 – shaded blue
in Figure 1) per FAA recommendation and request, as shown
in Figure 1. This critical improvement must be completed in
an expedited manner and drives the timeline for this
project.

Figure 1 – Location for Proposed Improvements
The southwest section of Taxiway B and infield, shown
in Figure 1, are showing weathering and cracking. The
recommended rehabilitation measure is to remove the top 4 inches of asphalt,
recompact the subsurface material, and replace the asphalt at the existing
finished grade.
Other areas of distress that would be repaired by
this project include the south Transient Parking Apron adjacent to Taxiway B,
the three southwesterly airplane tie-down lots, the turn around area at the end
of the Perimeter Road, the area between the northeast hangers, the area
surrounding the southeast hangers, the area between the
northwest hangers, and the area between the 3100 Airport Avenue
buildings (all shown in Figure 1). Recommended improvements include slurry
sealing, joint filler replacement, pavement crack sealing, and pavement
marking removal and replacement. Following these closures, the project
will be completed using rolling closures in the areas where work is performed
to minimize the impact on tenants and users.
Notice to Air Missions (NOTAMs) has been issued ahead of
these closures.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience as
we work expeditiously to complete the work. For questions related to this
project, please contact Owen Canady at owen.canady@santamonica.gov.
