As part of our commitment to continually enhance accessibility for our customers, Big Blue Bus (BBB) recently launched a new wheelchair securement system pilot on two (2) buses. With the push of a button, BBB customers using wheelchairs and scooters now have the freedom to safely secure themselves in place in just under 25 seconds. The new system is fully automatic and differs from the existing manual securement system allowing for quicker boarding, independence, and ease of use.
Here is how to use the device in three (3) steps:
1. Center the wheelchair or scooter in a rear-facing position, against the backrest. |
2. Push the button to initiate the securement system. |
3. Before exiting the bus, push the button again to release the mobility device. |
The new securement system is beneficial in three other ways:
- Speed – Secures a wheelchair/scooter in less than 25 seconds making the boarding process quicker and smoother for customers.
- Independence – Provides greater independence for customers who can now secure their own mobility devices with minimal assistance from bus operators.
- Safety – Helps eliminate the risk of wheelchair tip-over by securing mobility devices with arms that are equipped with adjustable grips.
Tip: When considering a mobility device purchase, a WC19-compliant model is the most easily secured on transit buses.
