In honor of Bike Month, we’re excited to launch these new resources which will help you celebrate biking in Santa Monica all month long.
1. New E-Bike Buying Guide
The growing interest in biking since the start of the pandemic has also generated interest in electric bicycles (e-bikes). With an electric boost every time you pedal, e-bikes make it easy to ride on hilly streets, run errands, and commute to work. GoSaMo Transportation Management Organization has developed an E-Bike Buying Guide to make selecting a bike as easy as possible!
Not ready to buy an e-bike? You can rent one through local bike shops around Santa Monica or through Lyft, which has 500 e-bikes stationed around the City. Learn more.
2. New Family Cargo Bike Library
The City’s electric-assist family cargo bike loaner program, operated by the Santa Monica Bike Center, allows families at eligible schools to borrow a family cargo bike for a one-week trial period for free. There are several options available to suit your needs - and all are zero-emission and environmentally friendly.
Requirements:
- You have a child living or attending school/child care in Santa Monica
- You have a secure place to park your bike overnight
- You agree to sign a waiver and agree to a security hold on a credit card.

3. How to Guide for Riding on Ocean Avenue Bikeway
As part of the Ocean Avenue project, the City installed the first protected bicycle intersection in Santa Monica at the intersection of Ocean Ave. and California Ave. Check out this blog post from April to get the full scoop and start enjoying the bikeway today!
4. Bike Anywhere Day is May 21
Bicycling is one of the biggest ways you can reduce Climate Change as well as improve your health. Which is why our friends at Santa Monica Spoke and Buy Local Santa Monica want you to join the celebration and encourage you to #BikeAnywhere and #BikeLocalSM on May 21 and throughout the month of May!
Local businesses are also encouraged to participate in Bike Anywhere Day. Sign up here to share your virtual activity, bike month special or promotion.
5. Bike It! Walk It! Week
Through the leadership of local parents, Bike It! Walk It! Week is also back! Participating Santa Monica elementary schools will be encouraging families to walk, bike, and scoot during the week of May 17 - May 21 to compete for the much-coveted Golden Sneaker.
