With only 8.4 square miles, Santa Monica's Historic Resources Inventory shows over 1,600 registered places—and that number may go up as the City conducts a comprehensive citywide update. Aside from places of historic significance, several new projects are demanding attention from leading architects across Southern California.

The Los Angeles Business Council hosted the 47th Annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards on June 22 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel. Addressing architecture built in the region as well as projects designed here but built elsewhere, Santa Monica-based projects commanded a number of categories.

The Preservation Award was given to the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Conservancy for the Shotgun House—a popular building typology in early Santa Monica that is now managed as the Preservation Resource Center by the Conservancy. Visit the Shotgun House for a look at Santa Monica’s humble beginnings.

The City received the Landscape Architecture Award for the Colorado Esplanade's design, displaying the City's commitment to public space and thoughtful long-term planning in how the Santa Monica Pier, Expo Light Rail, Third Street Promenade, and regional bike path would all intersect and flow.

Outside of the City's own public projects, below is a quick overview of Santa Monica-based projects recognized by the Los Angeles Business Council. Congratulations to all of the teams recognized for their talented work and outstanding designs.
