On May 6, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) recognized the city of Santa Monica with the 2024 Innovator Award for its Mobility On Demand Every Day (MODE) program. The Innovator Award acknowledges individuals or organizations that have pioneered creative approaches to enhance the well-being and financial stability of older adults within their community.
In 2018, Big Blue Bus partnered with Lyft to introduce MODE, a curb-to-curb, on-demand transportation program for older and disabled adults in Santa Monica. The program offers affordable, convenient, and reliable access to essential appointments, shopping opportunities, social engagements, and more. MODE is a lifeline program for Santa Monica residents, providing over 3,300 rides monthly on average, with a remarkable 41% increase in ridership year-over-year.
“Safeguarding freedom of mobility for Santa Monica residents is our top priority, and we appreciate the National Council on Aging for acknowledging MODE’s tremendous impact,” said Alfredo Torales, planning and performance manager for the Santa Monica Department of Transportation.
