The city of Santa Monica’s Women’s History Month Committee is excited to bring a slate of engaging events to the community throughout March that honor and celebrate the achievements of women of all identities. This year’s events embrace the city’s variation on the 2025 theme: “Moving Forward Together, Shaping the Future!

Since 1987, the month of March has been federally recognized as Women’s History Month, with all Americans encouraged to observe the month, and acknowledge and honor the achievements of women. Now, more than ever, it’s important that we highlight and celebrate the women who have paved the path toward equality and who continue to push boundaries, lift each other up, share their stories, and work toward a more just and equitable world for all.

The month kicked off with a Women’s History Month Artist Proclamation with Barbara Carrasco and Lindsey Haley at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Barbara Carrasco is an artist and muralist whose work has been exhibited in national/international museums and major venues. Her 16x80 foot long mural was acquired by Los Angeles Natural History Museum where it is on permanent display. Raised in Venice, Lindsey Haley is a poet, journalist and playwright with a focus on Chicana/Chicano culture and history. She is also a retiree of the city of Santa Monica, where she worked for 22 years!
