SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The City of Santa Monica has issued a curfew today, Monday, June 1, 2020 effective at 1:30 p.m. citywide through 5:30 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, June 2. The safety of Santa Monica residents and businesses is our top priority. We thank our residents and businesses for staying home last night and ask everyone to continue to abide by the curfew orders in effect today.
Santa Monica Police, in partnership with the National Guard and Fire Departments are on the ground today to continue to protect Santa Monica from potential threats.
“This is an active and fluid situation throughout Los Angeles County. Our primary focus in Santa Monica will remain life safety and the security of our community. We have zero tolerance for looting and the organized criminal activity we saw last night,” said Santa Monica Police Chief Cynthia Renaud. “Santa Monica Police Department with the support from the National Guard are on alert to respond to any potential threats. Our police force is hard at work and their professionalism was evident last night with no loss of life and no serious injuries.”
An extraordinary showing of love for Santa Monica is visible on our streets. Hundreds of community volunteers have come out in mass throughout the city to clean up the events of last night with their own brooms, tools, and trash bags. City leadership cannot express enough gratitude.
“The showing from our residents this morning is the definition of what it means to be a Santa Monican. These acts of community building and of unity are profound and moving. Thank you, thank you, thank you,” said Mayor Pro Tempore Terry O’Day. “To our businesses and shop owners, we share in your grief and are here with you as we recover, step by step, one foot in front of the other. To anyone in our City today, please be safe and abide by the curfew. Plan to leave Santa Monica or go back to your home by 1:30 p.m.”
