How to Become a Volunteer

Becoming a volunteer for a City managed program all starts by completing the volunteer application.  Once the application is completed a catalog of volunteers opportunities will be available to browse. Note: Santa Monica is a "Zero Tolerance" city and the majority of volunteer opportunities will require a live scan background check. 

Continue the Process:

Below will explain how to become a volunteer. 

  1. Create an account

    To get started, click here. Click on Register Now button. You will need complete the application.

  2. Volunteer Handbook

    After you create a profile read through the Volunteer Program Handbook.

  3. Find an Opportunity

    Browse the various volunteer opportunities. Click on "Learn More". Take note of the duties, qualifications, time commitment, and special instructions. 

  4. Respond to an Opportunity

    Express your interest by clicking on "Volunteer" under the section "How you can help". You may be prompted to provide additional information.  You will receive a message with next steps which depends on the volunteer opportunity and department-specific selection process. 

  5. Complete the Background check

    Depending on the volunteer opportunity you have selected you will be invited to complete a Live Scan (background check) and complete additional training and certifications.
