How to Obtain a Preferential Parking Permit
A Preferential Parking permit exempts a vehicle from preferential parking restrictions when you are parked in your zone and follow the 2-Block Parking Rule. Please click here to see if you are eligible to purchase a Preferential Parking permit (indicated in red) and to find out what zone you live in.
There are two types of permits for tenants and owners who live at the address: Residential and Visitor permits (both are permanent permits with the same privileges).
- Residential permits are tied to a specific vehicle (no maximum to how many you can purchase).
- Visitor permits offer flexibility in that they can be used in any vehicle, including your own (maximum of 2 per household).
Permitholders are not exempt from other parking regulations such as curb markings, alleys, parking meters, street sweeping, oversize vehicle regulations, or anywhere else where parking is prohibited. To avoid citation, active permits must be displayed at all times. There are 5 zones within the network with different renewal periods. Permits purchased in the first half of the period pay full cost, whereas permits purchased in the second half pay a reduced cost.
Preferential Parking permits are for residential purposes only. If you have an ADA placard, you need not purchase a Preferential Parking permit. If you are a residential owner and do not live at the address, please email us at: parking@santamonica.gov. You may be eligible to purchase up to 2 Visitor permits.
If you renew your permits at the counter, you will be asked to provide all current documentation either in digital or paper form because permits will be given to you.
Our hours of operation are 8:30 to 11:30 am and 1:00 to 4:30 pm, Monday thru Thursday and every other Friday.
