How to Register for Library Self Service

Library Self-Service is available at the Fairview Branch and Ocean Park Branch during operational hours. The Open+ system allows pre-approved patrons Branch access to browse, read, study, search the online catalog, checkout items, and use the computer stations. Printing and photocopying are available, as is Wi-Fi for those who bring their own devices.

Patrons can apply for Self-Service online or in-person. Please allow 2-3 business days for application processing and to receive a welcome packet via email.

What are the eligibility requirements for Self-Service access?

Applicants must have a valid Santa Monica Public Library card. Expired cards must be renewed. Post office boxes are not accepted as mailing addresses for Self-Service Hours access. Proof of address is subject to the Circulation address verification policies.
Applicants must resolve any fees on their Library account.
Applicants must have no Rules of Conduct violations.
Applicants must agree to and submit the Self-Service Hours Agreement, which is part of the online application.

What are the terms of agreement for Self-Service access?

Library card holders agree to the following terms when submitting their Self-Service application:

Accepts responsibility for the space, equipment, and furniture during the time they access a Library branch equipped with self-service technology.
Complies with Santa Monica Public Library Rules of Conduct policies and guidelines, including the Computer and Internet Use Policy.
Understands that per the Santa Monica Municipal Code section 1.08.030 (c) any person who violates any rule or regulation pertaining to the use of Library facilities may be subject to suspension of their borrowing or Library visitation privileges.
Understands that Library staff will not be available in person during the time they access self-service technology, but remote staff assistance is available by phone or e-mail. If issues cannot be resolved remotely, they may visit an open Library facility.
Understands that youth younger than 18 years of age MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
Agrees that they will not open the entrance to a Library branch equipped with Self-Service technology to other persons (who may or may not have been pre-registered) other than for immediate family.
Understands that the Library branch where Self-Service technologies are available are monitored by security cameras during all hours.
Will not access any staff areas or prohibited areas.
Will be able to summon help by calling 911 in an emergency.
Understands and agrees that access to self-service technologies and facilities are limited to pre-approved patrons. The City may revoke access due to violations of any rule or regulation pertaining to the self-service program, or if the City discontinues the program.

What services are available at a Self-Service Branch?

Services Available:

Self-Checkouts – Kiosks for checkouts and account management
Online Catalog Stations – Stations for online account management, renewals, searching, and discovery of Library material and online resources
Information Services – Reference and information services are available by phone (310) 458-8600 during operational hours or by e-mail at library@santamonica.gov
Study Space – The Library is available for studying, working, and reading.
Technology – The Library is equipped with public access computer stations. Printing and photocopying are available, as is Wi-Fi for those who bring their own devices

What is the Open+ system?

The Open+ system by Bibliotheca is comprised of access control systems that allow pre-approved patrons entry to the Fairview Branch and Ocean Park Branch. Santa Monica Public Library was one of ten libraries to receive a California State Library grant, making Self-Service possible.

Systems installed through the grant include:

Library Controller – This is the “brains” of the system that provides connection between sensors and the library system for authentication

Entry Panel – An input device where patrons scan or enter their Library card information

Door Automation – Allows the system to control when the Library door is open and closed

Cameras – Provides monitoring for both live and evidence-based surveillance of any incidents

Sound System – Allows for automated announcements including closures and safety announcements
