City Commissions to Hold Community Conversation on Homelessness

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- The City of Santa Monica Social Services and Housing Commissions will hold a special joint public meeting exploring the issue of homelessness.
WHEN: Saturday, February 4, 2017, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
WHERE: Santa Monica Civic Center East Wing, 1855 Main St., Santa Monica, CA 90401
WHO: Presenters and panelists, City staff as well as the following regional experts:
- Molly Rysman, Housing and Homelessness Deputy, Office of Supervisor Sheila Kuehl
- Andrea Iloulian, Senior Program Officer, Domestic Programs, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation
- Ann Sewill, Vice President, Housing & Economic Opportunity, California Community Foundation
WHAT: The community conversation will cover local and regional strategies to prevent and address homelessness. A presentation on local strategies by staff from the City’s Human Services and Housing divisions will be followed by a panel discussion with regional experts.
The latter half of the meeting will include presentation on Measure H, the Los Angeles County which is designed to provide the resources necessary to provide social service and housing support to 45,000 homeless county residents through a temporary 10 year increase of ¼% in the sales tax.
Overall, key questions to be addressed include:
- What is Santa Monica already doing and is it working?
- What else Santa Monica is or should be aspiring to do?
- How is this affected by other jurisdictions (local, state and federal) and what obstacles and/or opportunities exist?
- What resources and cultural competencies are required for success?
