The Acknowledge + Reframe Together (Reframe) Initiative of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs produces public art and civic memory projects that center community voices with the aim of creating a more just and equitable Santa Monica. In particular, Reframe focuses on centering the voices and experiences of communities of color who have been historically excluded from discourse about representation in civic spaces. Belmar History + Art (2019-2021) was a demonstration project that inspired this initiative. The City is now embarking on a public engagement process to reconsider the WPA-era mural by Stanton Macdonald-Wright in the historic City Hall lobby. Help amend and celebrate Santa Monica history by taking part in Reframe!

What has happened so far with this program?

The Belmar History + Art Project (2019-2021) was a precursor and inspiration for the Reframe Initiative. The Lives that Bind exhibit was an initial response to concerns about representation in City Hall artwork. It was initiated in 2018 and installed in 2020 by Cultural Affairs and the Arts Commission.Santa Monica Cultural Affairs hired a consultant to begin the public engagement process City Hall Mural project.

What's next?

The City Hall Mural Project is currently underway. Future projects will be considered as capacity allows.
