Statement on Bird Rides, Inc.

Santa Monica remains firm in its commitment to cultivate a new model of mobility that gets people out of their cars and using more sustainable ways to move around. Transportation safety is a critical component of any mode and Bird Rides, Inc., the company responsible for the motorized scooters for rent around town does not have a business license to operate on the public rights-of-way, putting their riders and our residents at risk. Last week, the City filed a criminal complaint against Bird Rides, Inc. for operating illegally in the Santa Monica after they repeatedly refused to comply with City citations. The City stands ready to engage with Bird leadership and work with them to ensure that they operate in full compliance with use of public space and safety laws.
